Project: THE BLESSED
Time: 2013 Medium: Photography Dimension and quantity: 60cm x 40cm 86pcs The Blessed is a collaborative project carried out by Korean dance group “Ubindance” and me during my residency in Seoul. There are 11 art spaces that Seoul Art Foundation owns. The project is to show the possibilities of dance and body movements fitting in those 11 art centers. Those who can dance are blessed. They bring people direct and instinctive happiness with no premise required and ask for nothing in return. As the performance begins, the dialog between the performer and the audience begins. All the possibilities of body movements is delivered between the two parties in a nonverbal way: presenting and receiving, feedback and re-presenting. The performance is not necessary to be in a form of a stage. When the dancer closes the eyes and frees his/her mind and body into dance, the space he/she is becomes the dedicated stage. The space is simultaneously the limitation and the possibility of movements. Just like the dancer transforms to the spiritual incarnation of dance, the space also transcends its own physical characteristics and becomes an ineffable entity allowing a communication between the dancer and itself which inspires more possibilities of dance. The dancer, the space and the audience thus form a subtle balance. They communicate with each other in a unspeakable where happiness lies within. It is blessing. The following link is my speech talking about this project and my feelings about dance in SIDANCE 2013, the Korean dance festival.
